Hi, there are no additives needed for the XT500. Leadfree fuel should be good enough for her, else there`s something wrong .

hi Jimmy,
me for myself always use unlead fuel in my xt`s
the subjekt unlead or additives is sooooooooooooo long.
i would say if you dont intend to start at sixdays with you hard modified XT500 ( 50 or more ps)
just lay back und enjoy you unlead burning XT, as long as you get it

Re: petrol quality for XT500 (1980 model)
To be honest I've just purchased my '81 XT after 21 years owning different Yamaha XJ 650 & 900. I still can recall my dealer's answer when I asked him in the 80's which fuel I shall use. You can use for every Yamaha from 1980 on unleaded regular fuel, but the XT 500 requires leaded premium fuel.
So 1st thing I did was to buy lead additive - call me crazy. But the story XTom has written about Marcs XT on the anniversary Dakar that just by using lead additive has reduced the oil consumption from 0.5L / 100 km to a normal consumption, convinced me that it might not be necessary, but it gives me at least a good feeling.
regards,
Bert

Re: petrol quality for XT500 (1980 model)
Japan itself prohibited leaded fuel back in 1980! So anything about needing lead additive seems to be nonsense!
